About Marcus

With 14 years of professional experience in web design and digital typography, Marcus has become a trusted voice in Hong Kong’s design community. He’s trained over 200 designers across the region, helping them master color psychology and typeface pairing in real-world projects.

The Journey

Marcus discovered his passion for typography during his early freelance years in Tsuen Wan. Working closely with local businesses on their digital presence, he became fascinated by why certain typeface and color combinations worked better than others. What started as curiosity evolved into systematic study.

He studied Graphic Design at Hong Kong Design Institute, then pursued postgraduate studies in User Experience Design at Lingnan University. Those foundations shaped how he thinks about design — always balancing theory with practical application.

The last decade has been focused on teaching and research. He’s conducted workshops at agencies like Elephant Design and M7 Creative, training teams on color theory and typography systems. But he’s also spent time investigating how Western design principles adapt to Hong Kong’s multicultural context. That research informs everything he teaches.

At ChromaType Academy

As Curriculum Lead, Marcus develops courses that break down complex concepts into practical, immediately applicable skills. He doesn’t believe in theory for theory’s sake. Every lesson connects to real design decisions you’ll face in your work.

His methodology is distinctive. Rather than lecturing about color harmony, he walks you through actual projects — analyzing why certain palettes work, how they influence user behavior, and how to adapt them for different contexts. Same with typography. He’ll show you kerning pairs in real websites, explain the thinking behind typeface selection, and help you develop the eye to spot good type pairing.

What drives him most is helping designers move beyond following trends. He wants them to understand the ‘why’ behind design decisions — that’s when the real learning happens. That’s when designers become confident enough to make bold, authentic choices.

Teaching Philosophy

“Design isn’t about following rules. It’s about understanding why the rules exist so you can know when to break them. Every color choice, every typeface pairing — there’s a reason behind it. My job is to help you see those reasons clearly.”

— Marcus Lau

Theory + Practice

Understanding design principles matters, but only if you can apply them immediately. Every lesson connects to real projects and real decisions you’ll face.

Context Matters

Color psychology works differently in Hong Kong than it does in New York. Type preferences shift with culture and audience. Good design acknowledges these differences.

Building Confidence

The goal isn’t to make you memorize design rules. It’s to develop your eye and your judgment so you can make confident, authentic design decisions independently.

Continuous Learning

Design trends shift, but principles endure. I focus on teaching you how to think about design so you can adapt to whatever comes next.
